About
I am a Licensed Associate Professional Counselor in the State of Georgia (License #APC002302). I received my BA in Psychology from Georgia State University in 2005 and my Master’s degree in Community Counseling from Argosy University in 2008. I have an additional certification in Marriage and Family Therapy. I have recently completed a 12-month program in facilitating experiential therapies.
I have five years of clinical experience working with individuals, couples, families, and groups. I have worked in a recovery-based setting, community-based treatment, and now in private practice.
I welcome diversity in my practice. I have worked with clients from diverse backgrounds and with different socio-economic groups. I am an LGBT friendly therapist. I have successfully helped clients individually who struggle with mild to severe anxiety, depression, impulse control, expressing or containing emotions, self-esteem, anger, body-image, communication, relational issues and more. I have helped couples heal from issues surrounding communication, trust, betrayal, infidelity, personality differences, early family dysfunction, parenting, anger, emotionality, over/under involvement and avoidance.
My husband, Dustin, is also a therapist and works out of the same office. You can learn more about the services he provides by visiting his website at www.cdustinjohnson.com.
Philosophy
Mental Health is the ability to live in a meaningful and joyful way while accepting and rising to life’s inevitable challenges. It is the journey instead of the destination that brings meaning and joy. Mental Health flourishes when we allow ourselves to live fully in the present moment, we act in ways that promote our well-being, and forgive ourselves when we forget or choose not to do so. This journey that is mindful living may take us in unexpected directions, but will ultimately lead to increased happiness and greater personal wisdom.
My Therapeutic Style
I believe that being an effective therapist is more than simply “listening” to clients who are struggling. My style includes empathic listening, reflecting and challenging my clients to look at themselves and their distress in a different way. I offer sensitive and honest feedback that might not be available from friends or family. I believe in empowering clients to be in charge of their own personal growth, while supporting and assisting them to find direction. My ultimate goal is for my clients to discover their own inner strength and joy through a safe, honest relationship and through the introduction and employment of skills and knowledge.
I think of myself as an advocate for and collaborator with my clients.
